While doing some pruning of my containerized lemon trees this past week, I noticed a bunch of ants crawling along the tree stems. Then I noted the sticky sweet honeydew and brownish bumps along the stems. Scale insects had attacked my small trees!

Scale are insects that look more like spots and bumps than legged and winged insects. They’re aliens even in the diverse world of bugs.
